A Florida family's Whirlpool refrigerator exploded inside their home Warning! Be aware.
All air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators, etc operate using chemicals/gasses known collectively as "refrigerants".
In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the air conditioning and refrigeration industries of the world are working to find better and safer refrigerants to use in their equipment. This must only mean better and safer for the environment because the choices they are making are definitely not safer for human beings.
The latest popular refrigerant that is determined to be much safer for the ozone layer and is becoming widely used worldwide is a gas known in the industry as R290. You will likely recognize it by it's more common name, Propane.
Yes, that's right, Propane. The hyper flammable and extremely explosive gas used to heat many of our homes. There are many ways that propane inside of a refrigeration system can become ignited. Easily during service and repair of the unit, or even just during normal operation as was the case in the video here. And what's worse, the propane used in this application is not odorized like the gas we use for heating. You will never know that the unit has developed a gas leak until the unit explodes inside of your home.
Miller's HVACR Services will never sell a piece of R290 equipment so long as there is any other option. If you are looking into the purchase of a new refrigerator or air conditioner, please be safe and make sure that the equipment you are getting is not using R290 refrigerant. This could be a ticking time bomb in your kitchen.
If you are concerned that you have purchased or are about to purchase equipment that may have this refrigerant, please feel free to call us and we will be happy to help you determine that.
